To Philippine Inquirer reporter Leah Salterio, the Philippine Inquirer
and ChannelnewsAsia reporter Jennifer Alejandro:
I congratulate you on your ability to dupe a majority of Art Bell fans.
After reading the letters posted in the feedback section at artbell.com,
I can see that most of his fans have missed the point and you have
succeeded in yours. Most of the letters go about explaining how obvious
the Art Bell/Filipino email was a hoax and how easy it was for them to
get the to the truth of the matter via the Internet.
Could you have been so incompetent and unprofessional?! I think not. I
am not that easily duped. I believe that any reporter who works for a
major international media corporation is not so careless as to have not
checked her sources and facts first, and knew the information was false.
So now, let us look at what is to be gained by publishing a story known
to be false.
A few possibilities-- To promote yourself, by having your name
associated with a "big" story.
To sell more newspapers.
Because "someone" paid you enough money that you were willing to
sacrifice your
professionalism.
For political reasons, including to get Filipinos minds off of
slain hostages.
Or maybe something as simple as the owners of your newspaper have
a radio program that
competes with Art's program!
These are just a few of a myriad of possibilities. Not being an
investigative reporter, I will leave it to the journalists to uncover the
truth. And I will leave it to the professionals to also investigate YOU!
Sincerely, Gary D. Cloppas
